Energy Read: Renewable Energy Facts and Fantasies – Foreward

Renewable energy books can get outdated pretty fast as the clean technology industry is still in its infancy; I try not to quote energy books without an edition younger than five years. The format of these posts: as I progress through the book I will post 3-5 interesting quotes per chapter.

Shields, C. (2010). Renewable Energy Facts and Fantasies. USA: Clean Energy Press.

Three quotes from the Foreward:

“We live in a world of tough realities—technological, economic, and political—and we all would do well to understand those realities if we are to have relevant discussions as to what we must do as a civilization.”

“My position is that renewables—in all forms—will fail without these three things moved into place.”

“The point is that we need to consider each of these three points on the renewable energy “triumvirate” if we are to have intelligent, responsible discussions on the subject of renewables…”

How I got this book: I emailed Craig Shields of that I would write him a book review if he gave me a copy of his book Renewable Energy Facts and Fantasies. That was when I was still an energy and emissions writer for My last post there was asked the community who was the best climate change blogger. I never got a definitive answer, but I do believe one of the best writers in the field of renewable energy is Craig Shields.

Next energy post:  3-5 quotes from the Introduction of Renewable Energy Facts and Fantasies.

To order Renewable Energy Facts and Fantasies, by Craig Sheilds, 2010: $15 for paperback and $8 for ebook.

Relationship Music Choices: My Next Girl, by The Black Keys

Music has the ability to shape the identity of a person. It has the ability to evoke moods and emotions, bring up memories from the past, and influence decision making. Therefore, it is important to choose good music! Particularly, the lyrics are important in shaping romantic ideas that affect a person’s world view on relationships.

Here’s to music that may or may not improve the male conceptions of love, My Next Girl, by the Black Keys.

Lyrics to: My Next Girl, by the Black Keys:

The look of the cake
It ain't always the taste
My ex girl she had
Such a beautiful face

I wanted love
But not for myself
But for the girl
So she could love herself

My next girl
Will be nothing like my ex girl
I made mistakes back then
I'll never do it again
With my next girl
She'll be nothing like my ex girl
That was a painful dance
Now I got a second chance

A beautiful face
And a wicked way
And I'm paying for her
Beautiful face every day
All that work
Over so much time If I think too hard
I might lose my mind

My next girl
Will be nothing like my ex girl
I made mistakes back then
I'll never do it again
With my next girl
She'll be nothing like my ex girl
That was a painful dance
Now I got a second chance

Several Important Lyrics for Relationships and Healthy Identity Formation: the whole song, read it over men. The artists warn of a beauty mesmerizing a man in a hurtful way, “A beautiful face, And a wicked way, And I’m paying for her, Beautiful face every day.” If that’s ever been the case, heed the warning of “My next girl, Will be nothing like my ex girl, I made mistakes back then, I’ll never do it again.” Learn from your mistakes.

Found My Phrase for Summer 2011

Run. Even if it means on your hands. Something I wish to improve is my tendency to “rest on my laurels.” I can justify taking a break at any time and I feel this has held me back. Well this summer I’m taking agency upon that.

Every three months I pick a phrase to live by and improve the quality of my life. It will more or less be a compass for my everyday decisions. I invite others to develop their own motivational posters at:

What iJuanCarlo Will be About

ijuancarlo will be about me. I am a 20-something trying to make a difference before I go (pass on). I am interested in what I believe to be the two most important issues of our time:

  1. Energy
  2. Relationships

I am a double major in psychology* and civil engineering and I plan to combine the two to be a relevant expert in renewable energy and business development. However, more than anything I like to write and put my thoughts in a medium where I can review them later. So this blog is about me, putting my thoughts somewhere that I can share, hopefully get feedback, and progress that purpose to make a difference before I go.

My goal with ijuancarlo is to develop my personal brand. I am in the early years of my career and this blog is for people to  decide whether I can be of some service. I want this blog to deliver the message that I am just a man striving to do good, although I am every bit capable of failing at that. I would like to make a living in renewable energy, business development, and even some sort of counseling or psychology services. So part of this brand development is choosing which industry I will inevitably head into.

Follow Me? If you’ve read this far shoot me a mention @jcspascua on twitter and let’s begin a conversation. I don’t care much for numbers, but I do want to develop connections with people that are along the same path as mine. If you’re into renewable energy, or relationships, or psychology, or business development and want to share opinions let me know in the comments. Leave your website for me to checkout there as well, cheers!

* As a side note, my most common conversations with friends and family would be troubles in friend, family, and dating relationships. I rarely get the opportunity to share my knowledge in civil engineering and renewable energy.
